LAS VEGAS – The biggest fight in UFC history, a moment of pageantry and pride watched the world around, ended with a brawl befitting a local show.
Just moments after UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov submitted former two-division champion Conor McGregor, he jumped the cage and launched himself into the crowd, starting a melee that ended with his forced exit from the arena over security concerns.
After several minutes of confrontation pitifully contained by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, UFC President Dana White stood in the octagon with Nurmagomedov, who just moments before had raged into the crowd to fight with McGregor teammate Dillion Danis (via Twitter).
“If I put this belt on you, everybody’s going to start throwing (expletive) into the octagon,” said White, standing next to NSAC executive director Bob Bennett and Nurmagomedov’s cornerman, Luke Rockhold, and two-division champ Daniel Cormier, who’d finally managed to calm down their teammate.
For the first time in UFC history, cage announcer Bruce Buffer announced the winner of the fight without the winner present. Nurmagomedov was shuttled away with a phalanx of security guards. Beer rained on the champ just as he made the exit at T-Mobile Arena.
It was an ugly moment in an otherwise triumphant night for Nurmagomedov, who likely will face disciplinary action from the NSAC.
The madness also spilled outside of the arena afterward (via Twitter).
Bad blood certainly flowed between the champ and McGregor’s team in the build-up to the fight; indeed, it was one of the centerpieces of the promotion for UFC 229. When McGregor teammate Artem Lobov was confronted by Nurmagomedov prior to UFC 223, it sent the ex-champ into a rage that culminated in a bus attack that left several fighters injured and McGregor arrested.
It’s now the second time a fight has erupted outside of the octagon. The previous time, White called it one of the most disgusting moments in UFC history. Then, it became part of the commercial.
If history is any indication, Saturday’s embarrassment will become the highlight reel for a rematch.
